Eco-Friendly Crematorium

Invention & Promotion

The Social Forestry & Environment Wing of the Forest & Environment Department is financing and promoting the construction of Eco-friendly Crematoria in different parts of the state. The Eco-friendly Crematorium, or Fuel-efficient Crematorium, is a revolutionary structure designed by the enterprising (Late) Shri Kambel Shullai.

The concept dates back to 2003 when (Late) Shri Kambel Shullai demonstrated a keen concern for protecting and conserving forests. The amount of wood consumed, the smoke emitted, unhygienic smells, and the duration of cremation in the open traditional method led him to invent this structure. The very first crematorium was constructed at Khimusniang Jowai by Seinraij Jowai under the supervision of the inventor himself.

Reducing Forest Pressure Traditional methods require massive amounts of firewood. The new design consumes significantly less wood, taking less time to burn, which ultimately reduces the pressure on local forests.

Methodology Comparison

Wood Consumed
Traditional ~3 cubic metres
Eco-Friendly ~0.80 cubic metres
Time Taken
4 to 5 hours
1.5 to 2 hours
Sanitation & Hygiene
Huge smoke released, unhygienic & uncontrolled
Less smoke, emitted controlled via chimney

Seeing the remarkable results, the design and concept was widely accepted by the Sein Raj and other community members. Subsequently, more structures were constructed in villages like Raliang, Shangpung, etc., where people are still following the traditional faith.

12 (twelve) completed locations in Jowai: Mihmyntdu, Thad Muthlong, Pasyih, Sabahmuswang, Mukhla, Ialong, Mynktung, Mynkrem, Khliehriat, Padu, Laskein-Nongkynrih, and Khonchnong Village.
