How we arrived at 1,754 Elephants
The latest elephant census in Meghalaya was executed between **26-03-2017 and 29-03-2017** utilizing the advanced **Dung Decay Count Method**. This scientific algorithm calculates the rate of dung pile deposition and decay against forest zones to extrapolate population density without stressing the herds.
- Calculates exact decay rates per square kilometer.
- Spans multiple blocks in Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia Hills.
- Direct census result: 1,754 wild elephants.
The Five Elephant Corridors of Garo Hills
Click on any of the five corridors below to view safe-passage dimensions, descriptions, and watch the herds traverse the green paths safely.
Siju - Rewak
Identified as a high-priority corridor by the Wildlife Trust of India. Steps are actively initiated by the Forests & Environment Department to acquire community lands to guarantee absolute safe passage to Garo Hills herds.
Indo-Bangladesh Trans-Boundary Collaboration
Elephant migration corridors stretch across borders. Inspect the timeline below and click to ratify trans-boundary SOP coordination treaties with neighboring Forestry Divisions.
Wild elephant herds regularly migrate between the Garo Hills of Meghalaya and Sherpur/Jamalpur districts of Bangladesh. Coordinated conservation agreements secure their safe boundary passage.
Held on 19-20th August 2015. Initiated initial dialogues on cross-border elephant migration and formulated points of action on trans-boundary forest corridor security.
