Functions & Activities

The FDCM engages in various commercial, supervisory, and environmental activities. Revenue generated is ploughed back to disburse staff pay and meet other exigencies such as office maintenance and plantation upkeep.

Timber Trading

The Government yearly earmarks wind-fallen trees and unclaimed seized timbers to the FDCM Ltd. After the royalty is deposited, these timbers are transferred to FDCM licensed sawmills (Darugiri or Nongpoh) for conversion, or sold at site through auction/direct negotiation.

Currently, FDCM is allotted timbers mostly consisting of Teak & Sal from the Garo Hills (T) Division.

Railway Container Export

After the Supreme Court banned road transport of timber in 1995-96, railway containers were devised for export. FDCM was allotted containers in 2007-08, but unfortunately, not a single container has been allotted to FDCM Ltd in the last 10 years.

Supervisory Works

Since January 2007, FDCM acts as a State Agency supervising the felling and sectioning of pine and non-sal trees under Approved Working Schemes in Jaintia Hills. The registered Forest Operator pays FDCM a commission for these supervisory works.

Sawmill Project

FDCM manages and operates two licensed sawmills at Nongpoh (Ri-Bhoi District) and Darugiri (East Garo Hills). Conversion is strictly carried out for legal timbers delivered under valid transit passes, though revenue has been irregular.

Bamboo Treatment Plant

A Vacuum Pressure Bamboo Treatment Plant was set up at Nongpoh sawmill as a technology demonstration (initiated by NMBA). It is the first such unit in the State, projected to process 30,000 bamboo culms to meet increasing market demand.

Raising of Plantations

For the past 25 years, FDCM has been actively raising plantations on private lands. While some have been handed back after the lease expired, FDCM continues to maintain and protect several remaining plantations.

Plantations Under FDCM Control

Due to a shortage of working capital, no new plantations have been created in the past decade. However, the maintenance and protection of the following existing plantations are still being carried out:
