Forest Resources Survey
Objectives
The main objective of the Division is the Mapping and Inventorisation of the natural resources of the State for utilization in planning and focusing towards scientific management and exploitation for the ultimate object of sustained yield. The data generated can be used to analyze economic growth and development, the state of the environment, and for planning as well as the formulation of policies that are conducive to the conservation and management of forest and land resources.
Additionally, it conducts macro-level mapping, preparation of management plans, and macro-level survey and inventory of Sacred Groves across different Districts with the primary objective to protect and conserve the Sacred Groves of the State.
Activities
Sacred Groves GPS Mapping
The Division has undertaken extensive GPS mapping of 125 Sacred Groves across multiple districts of Meghalaya to legally and scientifically demarcate these traditional conservation areas.
Key Achievements
Forest Inventory of Sacred Groves of Meghalaya (Vol-I)
Out of 125 Sacred Groves mapped, a detailed study and estimation of Growing Stock was successfully completed on 20 Sacred Groves, resulting in the publication of this comprehensive inventory.
Documentation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
A specialized study on the Medicinal Plants of Meghalaya was carried out across the state. The critical findings and species cataloging were compiled and officially published to support conservation efforts.
Forest Inventory of Sacred Groves of Meghalaya (Vol-II)
During the year 2017-18, 15 additional Sacred Groves were taken up for estimation of growing stock. Fieldwork and data collection are complete. Data analysis is currently underway for the upcoming Vol-II release.
